Wood floors require expansion space at the wall. Mouldings are used to cover the expansion area, to hide cut ends, to create height differences, and to accent the floor.
- BASE -- 5/8" x 2 1/4" up to 5 1/4"; used to protect the wall and "picture-frame" the wood floor.
- SHOE -- 1/2" x 3/4"; used on vertical face bases to complete expansion coverage; flexible enough to conform to irregular surfaces.
- QUARTER ROUND -- one quarter of a full round; 3/4" x 3/4"; used as show in some places.
- REDUCER -- 3/4" x 2 1/4" or 3"; used to make transition in thickness from wood floor down to a thinner surface (or carpet), generally through door openings.
- NOSE -- used to create a finished edge on a top step, around stairwell, sunken living rooms, etc.
